Non-Surgical Jawline Contouring

The chin and jawline play a pivotal role in shaping your face and framing your facial features. Make up artists emphasise the benefits of contouring with makeup to achieve a fashionable sculpted look, and an ever-growing selection of photo editing apps make it easy to enhance and refine your jawline into your desired shape. These methods may offer short term benefits, but what if you want results that are effective, long-lasting and evident in real life?

The Jawline and Facial Aesthetics

One of the most important facial features for an attractive and youthful look is a well-defined jawline. A strong square jawline and chin is desired in males, whilst an attractive feminine face usually consists of a smooth, softer and rounder jawline and chin.

At Kaya Cosmedica in Melbourne, we provide a non-surgical solution for men and women of all ages looking to sculpt their jawline with minimal discomfort and downtime. Jawline contouring can slim the face, improve a recessed chin, increase volume and definition, reduce the appearance of jowls, bring balance to your facial features and provide a more feminine, masculine or youthful facial profile without the need for surgery.

What Is Jawline Contouring?

When you think of jawline enhancement, you might picture a complicated and painful surgical procedure that requires the jaw to be broken or a treatment that involves liposuction or insertion of an implant to smooth or sharpen the face. These can be options for patients seeking extensive reshaping, but for mild to moderate concerns, results can be achieved without the need for anaesthesia, incisions or downtime. Non-surgical jawline contouring uses a mix of injectable treatments to improve signs of ageing and sculpt a more aesthetically appealing chin and jaw. By blending injectables, jawline contouring can improve an array of concerns and can be customised to each patient’s anatomy and goals.

Men and women both seek jawline contouring, but typically with different outcomes in mind. Women tend to express interest in the procedure’s ability to slim the face or soften a prominent jawline. On the other hand, men often want the stronger, more chiselled jawline that is often associated with masculinity. Whatever your needs, Dr Khinda will customise a solution just for you. Men and women can also both benefit from the procedure’s ability to treat some visible signs of ageing.

The Ageing Jawline

One of the most telling signs of ageing? A sagging jawline. While most people know about the effects of time on the skin, far fewer people realise that significant changes are happening to the deeper structures of the face. As we age, the bones of the jaw and mid face diminish, reducing the amount of “scaffolding” holding up the soft tissues of fat and skin in the face. The area next to the chin, known as the pre-jowl area, narrows as the bone behind the chin recedes or flattens out. This loss of structure results in the movement of the soft tissues of the face, which appears to us as the formation of jowls. The mandible, or lower jaw, also changes, with the angle of the bone below the ear at the back of the jaw widening. The effect of this is a loss of jawline definition, and ageing of the neck, with less support to the neck muscles (platysma) and other soft tissue.

Combined with gravity and the loss of tissue elasticity, signs of ageing in the jawline appear. While we cannot yet regrow lost facial bones, a number of non-surgical jawline contouring procedures can help address the loss of volume in the face. Beyond that, it can also reshape, shift and rejuvenate different layers of skin, fat and muscle for a more youthful result.

What Treatments Are Involved in Jawline Contouring?

At Kaya Cosmedica, we take a holistic approach to jawline contouring. Depending on your needs, your procedure may include a combination of injectables and even cosmeceutical-grade skincare. Some options we commonly use include:

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are placed deep into the subcutaneous tissue overlying the jawbone to volumise, lift and provide support to the lower face. This added fullness restores a more youthful appearance by plumping areas that have lost volume, lifting areas that droop, and smoothing away wrinkles and fine lines. Dermal fillers can also be used to correct asymmetries in the lower face, enhance the chin and sculpt a more defined jawline. Treatment is quick and nearly painless. Results are apparent immediately following your appointment, and side effects are mild.

Dermal fillers are a temporary and reversible treatment. How long the effects of your procedure last will depend on several factors, including the area of treatment, the type of filler used and the rate at which your body processes it. Ongoing sessions will be necessary to maintain your results, but dermal fillers can last for many months before follow-up treatment is required.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are often paired with dermal fillers to produce a dramatically more youthful and sculpted appearance. Lines and wrinkles appear over time as a result of the natural movement of your facial muscles. Anti-wrinkle injections contain a potent neurotoxin that inhibits the action of these muscles, thereby smoothing existing wrinkles and helping to prevent the development of new lines.

These injectables can also be used to relax and soften overly pronounced masseter muscles (the “chewing muscles”), which can give a woman’s jawline a fuller and unwanted masculine appearance. They can also relieve jaw tension and teeth grinding beyond reducing the size of jaw muscles.

Anti-wrinkle injections can also be placed under the jawline and along the neck to tighten the neck muscle called the platysma. The platysma is a muscle that pulls the jawline tissues including the jowls downward. Relaxing this muscle can tighten, smoothen and lift the skin in this area. This gravity-defying treatment is also commonly known as the Nefertiti Lift. Anti-wrinkle injections an also be injected into the chin, to relax the mentalis muscle which pulls the chin up. Relaxing this muscle can lengthen and better define the chin area.

Like dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections are a temporary treatment. Results can begin to appear three to five days after injection and reach their optimal levels within two weeks. Most patients can expect to see the benefits of the procedure for approximately three to four months, after which regular follow-up treatments will be needed to maintain the results.

Fat-Dissolving Injections

Patients seeking jawline contouring may benefit from including fat-dissolving injections as part of their treatment. Some fat deposits prove particularly stubborn in the face of diet and exercise, including the submental fat that creates a double chin. Fat-dissolving injections use a substance called deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in the body, to destroy fat cells under the chin so they can be processed and eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system. A slimmer and more sculpted jawline is left behind, with no incisions or scarring.

On average, optimal chin sculpting results are usually achieved after two injection treatments performed four to six weeks apart. More severe symptoms may require additional treatment sessions. Once your desired outcome has been reached, no further treatment sessions are needed. Because fat cells do not regenerate, you can enjoy permanent results from fat-dissolving injections as long as you maintain a stable weight.

Collagen Stimulators

Collagen stimulators can also be used to contour the jawline. As we lose collagen and elastin as we age, we see a significant reduction in the elasticity of our skin. Replenishing these molecules around the skin of our jawline provides support and structure, resulting in more youthful definition. Collagen stimulators contain a calcium molecule similar to that found in skin and bones, which breaks down over a number of months and stimulates the body to produce its own natural collagen in the treatment area. Once placed along the jawline with a microcannula, the increased collagen provides long term results increasing volume and providing structure and lift to the area.

Skincare and Skin Treatments

Achieving good skin enhances any results with treatment of the jawline area. Microneedling and LED therapy helps to induce collagen, strengthening the skin and dermal layers to provide better skin texture and skin tightness.

An effective skincare routine also helps to address anti-ageing concerns and is a good preventative measure. Active ingredients like Vitamin A stimulates and increased the production of collagen and elastin, and can help with reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture, acne and even pigmentation.

What To Expect From a Jawline Contouring Procedure

Each patient’s needs and goals are unique, and each jawline contouring procedure is customised as a result. During your initial consultation, we will discuss your concerns and determine what combination of treatments is needed to achieve your desired results. We will also discuss the optimal schedule for ongoing touch-up treatments to maintain your results.

Once your treatment plan has been developed, Dr Khinda will administer the appropriate procedures to sculpt your new chin and jaw contours. The length of your treatment session will depend on the type and extent of the treatments you receive. Possible side effects will also vary depending on the injectables used, but every procedure involved in jawline contouring is minimally invasive and requires little to no downtime.
