Facial Filler Revision & Correction

Dissolving and correction of dermal filler treatments are performed to correct or reverse the effects of previous dermal filler treatments, especially if the results were unsatisfactory or if there were complications.  Treatment involves the use of hyaluronidase, a specific enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid fillers.

Dermal fillers are among the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments available today. With no incisions, anesthesia and minimal downtime, dermal fillers can temporarily sculpt the face, soften fine lines and wrinkles, enhance lip shape and size, accentuate the chin or jaw, fill hollows under the eyes or improve the appearance of shallow scars. Results appear immediately after treatment and can last for months before new injections are required to maintain their appearance. In the hands of an experienced injector, dermal fillers are a safe and effective treatment that can produce symmetrical, subtle, natural-looking results.

The substantial increase in demand for dermal fillers, has led to a significant rise in number of providers offering these treatments.  It is important to be aware that not all providers possess the necessary experience skills and qualifications to perform the procedure.  This can potentially lead to complications, over filling and dissatisfaction with the outcome.

Even in capable hands, perfect outcomes are not attained every time. Cosmetic treatments like dermal fillers are not an exact science. Some patients change their minds about their treatment goals, while others find they simply do not like the look or feel of fillers. At Kaya Cosmedica, Dr Khinda uses her training, experience and knowledge of anatomy and cosmetic treatments to offer corrective services for patients seeking to revise dermal filler treatments.

Why might someone seek dermal filler correction?

Serious complications from dermal fillers are rare, but as with any other cosmetic procedure, there is some risk involved. These risks vary depending on the type of filler used, the skill of the injector and the way each patient’s unique body responds to the filler material. Issues frequently encountered by many patients include:

  • Excessive swelling
  • Asymmetrical or distorted results
  • Lumps or uneven texture
  • Overfilling that causes an unnatural, puffy appearance
  • Underfilling that produces no visible results
  • Migration of filler to other areas

In more extreme cases, patients may seek filler correction after developing an infection, allergic reaction, granuloma or blockage of a blood vessel (necrosis). Other patients experience no adverse side effects but wish to improve their results or decide fillers are not right for them after all.

What options do I have if I’m unhappy with my results?

Should the results of your dermal filler treatments fall short of your expectations, seek a review with your injector.  It is encouraged to have a review appointment with your injector to discuss your concerns and offer the the opportunity to address them.  If that option does not suit you,  book a consultation with Dr Khinda at Kaya Cosmedica in South Melbourne for an assessment, and to discuss the options that are most suitable for you.

Some types of dermal filler are temporary. Though it is not a rapid solution, these kinds of fillers will eventually be broken down and absorbed by the body. If you are not interested in pursuing a more aggressive or invasive approach and there is no clinical need as assessed by Dr Khinda, you can wait for the filler to go away on its own.

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be wholly or partially removed using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. When injected into the treatment area, hyaluronidase quickly dissolves the particles in the filler, eliminating the need to wait months for the filler to disappear naturally.  Unfortunately biostimulators or permanent fillers cannot be completely dissolved with this method.

A skilled injector with a good aesthetic eye may be able to improve unsatisfactory results by strategically placing new filler to reshape the original results into a more attractive outcome. This option does not require starting over or completely replacing the product.

Certain kinds of dermal fillers are designed to be more durable and are more difficult to revise. In cases where injection treatments are not effective, the product must either break down on its own or be removed surgically.

Which areas can be corrected?

Dermal fillers can be administered to many different areas of the face. The same areas are potential candidates for facial filler revision. Common areas include:

How many filler revision treatments will I need?

In most cases, only a single treatment is required to achieve optimal results.  Additional correction sessions may be necessary depending on the type of filler used, quantity of volume of dermal filler and location of treatment/migration.  A MRI scan may be necessary prior to dissolving to identify features such as location and migration prior to dissolving.  Dr Khinda will discuss a recommended treatment plan with you during your consultation.

Is it possible to re treat with fillers after dissolving?

A patient who has dissolved fillers with hyaluronidase is able to receive new dermal filler injections. However, the new injections must be administered at a later date. Hyaluronidase and additional filler injections cannot be performed at the same time, as the dissolving enzyme already in the body would act on the new fillers. It’s best to let the area completely settle before considering a new filler treatment.

How can I reduce my risk of needing dermal filler revision?

Ideally dermal filler treatments with hyaluronic acid requires no correction at all. The decision to undergo these treatments should not be taken lightly.  The most important thing you can do to ensure a safe and pleasant experience is to choose a properly trained and highly-skilled injector. Check your provider’s qualifications and ask about their experience performing dermal filler injections. Review before and after photos in their office or on their website to be certain you like the aesthetic. The successful outcome of your treatment will be directly related to the skill of your provider’s technique as well as their eye for facial aesthetics.
