BBL Photofacial

Between bad skincare habits, sun exposure, pollution and ageing, our skin can become dull and damaged. One of the most popular ways to restore skin health and aesthetics is Intense Pulsed Light therapy, also known as IPL or a photofacial. IPL treatment can improve a range of skin conditions, including pigmented spots and vascular lesions. It is also effective for reducing redness caused by rosacea and general flushing, something only a few other light-based procedures can do.

Sciton’s BroadBand Light (BBL) is an enhanced photofacial technology that delivers the most powerful IPL treatments available. BBL can help take years of damage off your complexion, or simply help you feel more confident in your skin.

What Is BroadBand Light Therapy?

BBL is a cutting-edge procedure that uses short blasts of high-intensity light to restore the skin’s natural texture and tone. A study conducted by Stanford University Medical School in California found that regular photofacial treatments don’t just produce younger looking skin, but can also alter the expression of genes associated with ageing so they resemble their expression level in more youthful skin. In other words, at the molecular level, the participants’ cells behaved like younger cells.

How Does BBL Therapy Work?

Like other IPL treatments, BBL therapy works by heating specific layers of the skin. The device emits broad-spectrum light energy that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in skin or the haemoglobin in blood vessels causing redness. As these structures absorb the light energy and heat up, they are damaged and destroyed, allowing the body to remove them through natural processes. The surrounding tissues are unaffected.

BBL photofacials also stimulate collagen production for general rejuvenation. The result is smoother, firmer, more luminous skin with fewer complexion imperfections.

What Can BBL Therapy Be Useful For?

This advanced IPL treatment can improve a number of skin issues and cosmetic blemishes that contribute to an aged appearance:

  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Fine lines
  • Acne
  • Acne-associated inflammation and redness
  • Broken capillaries
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Redness caused by rosacea
  • Flushing
  • Lost elasticity
  • Enlarged pores
  • Dull skin
  • Irregular texture

What Areas Can We Treat?

BBL treatments are most popular for the face, neck, chest, shoulders and backs of the hands. They can also cover larger areas that would benefit from vascular lesion removal or photorejuvenation, including the back, arms and legs.

Am I a Good Candidate for BBL Therapy?

Women and men of all ages seeking healthy, beautiful skin can be good candidates for BroadBand Light therapy. BBL is gentle and safe for most skin tones, but it is generally recommended for those with lighter and untanned skin tones. Because the light targets melanin, tanned skin or naturally dark skin may be at risk of burning, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation or scarring.

Your Kaya Cosmedica provider will assess your skin, your cosmetic goals and your health history during a consultation to ensure you are a candidate for the BBL treatment. If you are not, your provider may recommend alternative skin rejuvenation options like chemical peels, microneedling or LED therapy.

What Does the Treatment Involve?

Before your treatment commences, your provider will walk you through the procedure and answer any questions you have. You will lie down and put on a safety shield or glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. Your provider will apply a cold gel to your skin, then place the handpiece over the treatment area.

You might experience warmth and tingling while the device sends broadband light into your skin. The sensation is often compared to a hot rubber band flicking against the skin. Whilst everyone’s tolerance level is different, most clients have a comfortable treatment experience. There is no need for a topical anaesthetic cream.

A BBL photofacial typically takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

What Is the Downtime After a BBL Treatment?

After a BBL session, you may experience some redness or swelling that should subside within a few hours to a day. There is no required downtime after this procedure. If pigmented lesions were part of the treatment, you may see a darkening of the pigmentation followed by fading and flaking off over several days. This is completely normal — the lesions are breaking apart so your body can eliminate them. Full healing is usually reached within seven to 10 days, so allow recovery time if you have an important event coming up.

Your provider will inform you of any aftercare instructions on the day of your appointment. Most importantly, try to avoid serious sun exposure for a week or two after the treatment. Your healing skin will be extra sensitive to ultraviolet light.

What Results Can I Expect?

BBL therapy helps to soften or erase the appearance of acne, pigmentation, vascular lesions and signs of ageing. You may start to see healthier looking skin in just a few days after treatment. Sunspots, age spots or broken capillaries usually begin to clear up in one to two weeks. Once your results are fully realised, the treated skin will feel smoother and tauter, lines and pores will be less noticeable, and redness or pigmentation will fade.

How Many BBL Treatments Are Needed?

The number of BroadBand Light treatments needed varies from person to person. Your provider will personalise a treatment plan based on your skin concerns and the level of improvement you desire. Most patients see the best results with a series of three to four BBL sessions, scheduled two to four weeks apart. After the initial treatment series is complete, results can be maintained with follow-up sessions at least once per year.

Can BBL Be Used With Other Treatments?

IPL can be combined with other aesthetic procedures to further personalise your treatment. Depending on your needs and goals, your options may include anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, injectable collagen stimulators or skin needling with Dermapen.
