Microneedling uses tiny needles to create microscopic injuries in the skin. These micro-wounds stimulate a natural healing response, leading to increased collagen and elastin production and a reduction in textural concerns like large pores and fine lines.
Radiofrequency, or RF, is a type of electromagnetic energy that can be used for both skin resurfacing and skin tightening. When this technology is combined with microneedling, RF energy is delivered between the microneedles tips to heat the deeper layers of the skin and remodel collagen and elastin.

Before undergoing the procedure, you will have a consultation with your treatment provider at Kaya Cosmedica to discuss your skin history and any past cosmetic procedures. This will allow us to determine if the treatment is right for you and prepare you for what to expect. You will receive pre-treatment instructions based on the current condition of your skin.
These instructions may include avoiding wearing makeup to your appointment and staying away from sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanners for at least one month before the treatment. Additionally, you should stop using irritating skincare products and harsh active ingredients (such as retinoids and chemical exfoliants) for at least four days before your appointment.
It is also crucial to make sure you’re wearing sunscreen everyday for at least 2 weeks before your treatment to avoid any adverse outcomes like hyperpigmentation.
The Genius system includes a handheld device that produces RF energy through insulated gold-plated microneedles. Your provider will select a treatment tip and adjust the device settings to suit the unique needs of your skin. Once the system is calibrated, your provider will move the handpiece over your skin in a stamping motion, pausing long enough to allow the needles to transmit RF energy into the dermal layer.
Depending on the area being targeted, your provider may make more than one pass. Many areas of the body are treatable, including the face, neck, décolletage, underarms, abdomen, arms and thighs.
The level of discomfort experienced during a radiofrequency microneedling treatment may vary from person to person. It’s normal to feel some heat and pressure during the procedure. While the sensation may be uncomfortable, it is generally tolerable.

After your RF microneedling session, your skin will be red and may feel warm and inflamed. You may look as if you have a sunburn. These initial effects typically subside within a few days following treatment. Scattered pinpoint bleeding, mild bruising and temporary marks from the needles are also possible.
As the micro-injuries heal, you may notice tiny crusts forming in the treated area. Allow these to fall off on their own. You should not rub or pick at them, as this can lead to irritation, infection or scarring.
There is no required downtime following RF microneedling, and most activities can be resumed straight away. However, some people choose to take a day or two off social activities to allow the post-treatment redness to fade.
Your skin will be sensitive after your RF microneedling session. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure and stick to gentle skincare products for one to two weeks. You may also be instructed to steer clear of makeup and exercise for up to a few days to support the healing process. Your provider will give you complete instructions on how to take care of your skin post-treatment, and you may reach out at any time if you have questions.
As with any aesthetic procedure, side effects are a possibility. These include pinpoint bleeding, slight bruising, transient discolouration, redness, swelling and itching. Cold sores may also occur in people who are prone to them; this can be prevented with medication.
If any of the following conditions apply to you, you may not be a candidate for RF microneedling: active skin conditions or infection in the treatment area, implanted medical devices, vascular disease or history of bleeding disorders, certain allergies, impaired immune system, or injectables applied to the treatment area within two weeks.
The process of collagen building takes time. While it’s possible to see initial improvements around the four- to six-week mark, full results will not be apparent until later. Generally, final results should be expected around six months after your last session.
