Collagen Stimulators

Collagen stimulators are the next generation of cosmetic fillers and are also known as biostimulators. They help to volumise and provide lift by stimulating the underlying dermal tissues to kickstart collagen production, resulting in the restoration of facial volume and improvement in skin structure.

Collagen is the main structural protein in the skin that gives it its firmness and smoothness, two things associated with a more youthful appearance. As we age, the body’s production of collagen decreases, resulting in thinner skin with fine lines, loss of volume and elasticity. With collagen stimulator injections, the skin gradually improves in its structure, getting strengthened from within and turning back the clock for the complexion.

Due to Australian TGA regulations, we are unable to name the brand of collagen stimulator that is used. It is made up of tiny calcium-based microspheres (similar to minerals naturally found in the body) suspended in a water based gel. Over time, the body absorbs the gel and microspheres leaving behind only the natural collagen produced as a response to the filler. Partial volumising results are immediately apparent and further improvement to the texture and quality of skin continues over the next 6 months, with results lasting up to 2 years.

Collagen stimulators are best used to rejuvenate the overall face, with most improvement seen around the mouth, as well as in the mid to lower face including the nasiolabial folds, mariontette lines, crepey skin around the lower cheek, submalar hollowing and to lift areas of jowling in the lower face. It can also be used for the treatment of scars and to restore volume to the back of the hands.

What happens during treatment?

Local anaesthetic is injected superficially under the skin to minimise discomfort. Either a fine needle or cannula is used to deposit the collagen stimulator under the skin in long threads. The area is then massaged to distribute the product evenly. There may be some redness, bruising and swelling post treatment, but it will fade and go away within the week. It is recommended that patients massage the area daily for up to 5 days to ensure the product remains evenly spread out.

How long does it last?

The effect of collagen stimulators can last up to 2 years, gradually producing new collagen growth and further increasing volume over time.

What are the possible side effects?

The most common side effects are minor. These include tenderness, redness, bruising and swelling. These may last anywhere from two to 5 days. Small lumps may appear but resolve spontaneously after a few weeks.
