Broadband Light Therapy (BBL)

The Sciton Broad Band Light (BBL) is a world renowned, innovative and versatile light based technology used at Kaya Cosmedica for skin rejuvenation.  It delivers a controlled spectrum of light wavelengths to target concerns such as pigmentation, sun damage, vascular lesions and overall skin enhancement and rejuvenation.  BBL stimulates collagen production, resulting in a more even skin tone, improvement in skin texture and overall reduce signs of ageing.

At Kaya Cosmedica we offer three different approaches to BBL based on your skin needs and to ensure optimal results are achieved.

BBl Corrective

A multi functional treatment with its ability to target pigmentation and redness simultaneously. This corrective process allows the elimination of fine vessels and reduces unwanted melanin that produces sun and age spots.

BBL Forever Young

Forever Young is an integrative treatment that can be done as a stand alone or performed after your course of corrective treatments. With its ability to target pigmentation, redness, tone, texture associated with ageing, but also rejuvenate forever young is the perfect treatment to ensure your skin looks and feels youthful.

BBL Forever Clear

Forever Clear takes a multi step approach to combat acne by using light energy to comfortably and effectively clear acne.  The skin is first treated with the blue BBL light to eliminate acne causing bacteria.  The yellow BBL light is then used to target and reduce inflammation caused by acne, followed by the infrared light in gentle but rapid pulses to initiate the body’s natural healing processes.

WHAT IS BROADBAND LIGHT THERAPY?

BBL is a cutting-edge procedure that uses short blasts of high-intensity light to restore the skin’s natural texture and tone. A study conducted by Stanford University Medical School in California found that regular photofacial treatments don’t just produce younger-looking skin but can also alter the expression of genes associated with ageing so they resemble their expression level in more youthful skin. In other words, at the molecular level, the participants’ cells behaved like younger cells.

HOW DOES BBL THERAPY WORK?

Corrective

The light energy delivered gently heats up the upper layers of the skin targeting different chromophores such as melanin and redness caused by broken blood vessels. The light then eliminates the targeted concerns resulting in clearer skin.

Forever Young

Forever Young delivers heat and energy to target different layers of the skin as well as deep into the cells to activate certain genes associated with youth and simultaneously switching off those associated with ageing. As a result new proteins and skin cells are formed and programmed to function youthfully.

Forever Clear

Forever Clear incorporates 3 steps where different lights are converted to heat eliminating acne causing bacteria and redness associated with acne.

What can BBL therapy be useful for?

BBL can target concerns such as:

  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Freckles
  • Pigmentation
  • Fine lines
  • Acne
  • Acne-associated inflammation and redness
  • Broken capillaries
  • Redness caused by rosacea
  • Flushing
  • Texture
  • Dull skin

What areas can be treated?

BBL treatments are most popular for the face, neck, chest, shoulders, and back of the hands.  It can be used on any part of the body as required.

Am I a good candidate for BBL therapy?

BBL is gentle and safe for most skin tones, but it is generally recommended for those with lighter and untanned skin tones. Because the light targets melanin, tanned or naturally dark skin may be at risk of burning, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, or scarring.

During a consultation, your Kaya Cosmedica practitioner will assess your skin, cosmetic goals, and health history to ensure you are a good candidate for the BBL treatment. If you are not, your provider may recommend other sun damage facials or skin rejuvenation options like chemical peelsmicroneedling or LED therapy.

How should I prepare for BBL?

An initial consultation with our practitioners at Kaya Cosmedica is essential to assess your skin with our VISIA machine to ensure suitability and design a treatment plan specific to your skin needs. Prior to your first BBL treatment it is important you are prepping your skin with active ingredients at least 2-4 weeks prior to maximise results. The use of daily sun protection is also essential.

To enhance your results and protect your skin, it is  recommended that the following steps are taken to prepare for BBL therapy:

  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and any suntanning for four weeks.
  • Avoid other light-based procedures and waxing for two weeks.
  • Discontinue the use of photosensitising medications or skincare products for one week, such as prescription retinoids.
  • If you have a history of cold sores, take an antiviral if prescribed.
  • Do not wear makeup or skincare products on the day of your procedure.

What does the treatment involve?

You will first begin with a consultation to determine the kind of BBL best suited for your skin concerns and type. During your treatment your skin will first be cleansed and you will be provided with safety goggles. A cold gel will be applied to your skin before the handpiece is placed over the treatment area.

You might experience warmth and tingling while the light absorbs the targeted concerns. The sensation is often compared to a hot rubber band flicking against the skin. While everyone’s tolerance level differs, most clients have a comfortable treatment experience. There is no need for a topical anaesthetic cream.

Treatment typically takes 30 – 40 minutes.

What will my skin look like after BBL?

After a BBL session, you may experience some redness or swelling that should subside within a few hours.  You may also feel warmth and a sunburned sensation. These are normal responses following a session. Cool compresses and over-the-counter medications can help relieve the temporary discomfort if needed.

If pigmented lesions were a target of the treatment, you may see a darkening of the pigmentation initially. This is a good sign — it means the pigment is responding to the treatment and breaking apart so your body can eliminate it. People often describe the pigment as looking and feeling like coffee grounds at this stage.

Although it may be tempting to scrub or pick at it, allow the pigment to exfoliate naturally. The dark, scaly areas typically flake off within one to two weeks, leaving healthy and clear skin behind. Please schedule your treatment with this timeline in mind if you have an important event coming up.

What is the downtime and aftercare following a BBL treatment?

There is no required downtime after this procedure. You will receive aftercare instructions on the day of your appointment. Following these guidelines is critical to ensuring the health of your skin and the success of your results.

Most importantly, avoid serious sun exposure for a week or two after the treatment. Your healing skin will be extra sensitive to ultraviolet light.

Additional recommendations may include:

  • Applying a soothing ointment or aloe vera.
  • Avoiding hot environments (e.g., saunas).
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise and sweating.
  • Delaying the use of chemical and physical exfoliants.
  • Avoiding active, sensitising skincare ingredients.
  • Twice daily use of a gentle moisturiser.
  • Strategies for coping with discomfort, swelling, or scabbing.

What results can I expect?

BBL therapy helps to soften or erase the appearance of acne, pigmentation, vascular lesions, and signs of ageing. You may start to see healthier-looking skin in just a few days after treatment. Sunspots, age spots, or broken capillaries usually begin to clear up in one to two weeks.

How many BBL treatments are needed?

The number of BroadBand Light treatments needed varies from person to person.  Most patients see the best results with three to four BBL sessions scheduled two to four weeks apart. After the initial treatment series is complete, patients can maintain results with follow-up sessions at least twice a year.

Can BBL be used with other treatments?

BBL can be combined with other aesthetic procedures to further personalise your treatment. Depending on your needs and goals, your options may include anti-wrinkle injectionsdermal fillers, injectable collagen stimulators, or skin needling with DermapenDuring your initial consultation, all your skin concerns and goals will be discussed and a full program will be recommended based on these.
