What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a component of blood that contains a concentrated amount of platelets which play a crucial role in the body’s natural healing processes. A small sample of the patient’s own blood is drawn and processed through a centrifuge that separates the components of blood, resulting in a platelet rich layer which is extracted. PRP contains a significantly higher concentration of platelets compared to whole blood, rich in growth factors and other bioactive proteins, that play a vital role in cell growth, tissue repair and wound healing. When PRP is applied to the target area such as skin, scalp or joints it can stimulate cell proliferation, collagen production and optimise the healing process.

PRP has been used in the medical field to promote healing of injured tendons, ligaments and joints and it is now being incorporated into aesthetic medicine to promote skin rejuvenation and stimulate hair growth.

How Can PRP Benefit the Skin?

PRP treatments may offer a multitude of benefits. When applied to your skin, PRP promotes cell turnover and helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in a more rejuvenated complexion.

PRP treatments aim to:

  • Increase skin firmness and tightness
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve skin texture and tone
  • Remodel scars
  • Minimise sun damage and melasma
  • Enhance skin radiance
  • Accelerate the skin’s natural healing process

How Can PRP Benefit Thinning Hair?

The benefits of PRP do not stop at skin rejuvenation. PRP is also used in hair restoration treatments to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth. As we age or experience certain conditions, our hair follicles can become dormant or miniaturised, leading to thinning or sparse areas on our scalp. When applied to the scalp, PRP promotes the growth of new hair by reactivating dormant hair follicles increasing hair density and coverage.

In addition to stimulating hair growth, PRP can also improve the quality and texture of the hair. PRP increases blood circulation and delivery of vital nutrients to the scalp. This helps strengthen existing individual hair strands, making them more resistant to breakage and damage. This can result in fuller, healthier-looking hair that is less prone to thinning or shedding. It is important to note that PRP is not suitable for all causes of hair loss- we only treat androgenetic hair loss.
